This sounds really cool!

I think RAW and Leary got together and split the Eight Circuits in half: 1-4 Terrestrial; 5-8 Post-

Terrestrial, in a rhetorical ploy to get the readers to focus on their own circuits and to identify with the post-terrestrial, given the Nixon-Reagan world in which this was hashed out.

Also, and I suspect Joseph Flatley is all over this: Leary as political prisoner, kept in solitary for times in different prisons, obviously emphasized the "get off this planet" riffs. Wouldn't you?

Well I did spend years inside his head working on this book, reading pretty much everything he wrote and talking to people who knew him. Of course he had his phases: Eastern guru, neurologic, VR guy, leftist revolutionary (that one was mercifully brief) but I found a remarkable consistency in his work that spanned his entire career. I don't think acknowledging that contradicts what Alpert was saying. But like I said, it's all in my book?

I find the concept of eight circuits intriguing. I know from my own experiences with ayahuasca and other shamanic medicines and practices, that when we shift into spirit world and back, it is a 7 dimensional shift, with the 8th dimension being our physical body that stays in place while the rest wander. Leary was a true pioneer, blending science with spirituality in a way that could be understood, but yet not quantified.

was just listening to a podcast about how Leary was probably a CIA asset, adjacent to MKULTRA. sounds like they finally broke him at Vacaville but he was on the payroll long before that. not quite the psychedelic saint people imagine.

A lot of nonsense has been written about Leary being a CIA asset. Anytime Timothy Leary gets any good press the knives come out.

R. G. Miga's avatar

why "nonsense"?

conveniently missing funding records for his research. the luckiest of lucky scores, to be gifted a whole mansion by the scions of one of America's most powerful old-money families. Leary's well-publicized disappearance within the prison system while at Vacaville. to say nothing of Leary's own confession to being a witting team player?

what's the counter-evidence? apart from the say-so of transparency theorists who think that either a) the CIA *definitely wouldn't* try to recruit Leary for MKULTRA, or, b) if they did, they would definitely tell us, in the name of patriotism and good sportsmanship.

Wow, you went from "I was listening to this one podcast..." to the expert on the subject real quick there. All I have to say is that if you look into the story closely it *is* nonsense. I will probably have to write a newsletter article one of these days.

sounds great! give us a preview. just a quick thumbnail sketch. what's the counter-evidence?

forget the post, actually. you should probably skip straight to writing a book. could make a lot of money if you've got actual evidence disproving the researchers who have allegedly found all these highly suggestive blank spaces in Leary's official biography.

as long as it's not some purely vibes-based hagiography based on the man's supposed character, or something embarassing like that.

but go on then. give us a taste.

I'm trying to be reasonable. Why are you so angry?

R. G. Miga's avatar

who's angry?

annoyed, maybe. i don't particularly enjoy being casually contradicted by people claiming to have the intelligent, common-sense understanding of the subject, only to trip over their own clown shoes when asked to substantiate their claims with actual evidence or logic.

not saying that's *you*, necessarily. just describing a pet peeve of mine.

but that's not important. very interested to hear this counter-evidence you mentioned. do go on.

You are taking Tim far more seriously than he ever took himself. To him it was all a game, a series of pranks, for fun, and fame. As Alpert said to me: Tim inhabits metaphors the way a snail inhabits shells. Crowley was quickly passing phase, like all his other acts. The only constant throughout his epic life was "question authority, think for yourself."

I disagree. I think Leary was serious about his ideas, but he wasn't grim. A sense of humor is one of the most important and probably one of the most evolved parts of being human!

I addressed this in my book, which I highly suggest you purchase. If possible, purchase multiple copies. And don't forget to give it a five-star review on Amazon.

I wonder what makes you think he was serious about his ideas. Have you gotten that impression from anyone who knew him? I don't buy books unless I have a reason to. What makes yours worth my time or money, or a five star review?
