On the Propensity for Psychedelic-Induced Nature-Connectedness and the Demand for New Sacred Spaces

A ‘record-breaking turnout of an estimated 25,000 people’ witnessed the 2025 solstice sunrise at Stonehenge.[i] This sacred site has a reputation as a psychedelic gathering place which owes more to modern countercultures than ancient traditions. It is an association that took root in the late 1960s when New Age and psychedelic countercultures began regarding the solstice as a moment of cosmic renewal. This tradition continues today.
In this article, I argue that this groundswell in neo-pagan gatherings correlates with an increased use of ‘classic’ or serotonergic psychedelics (such as psilocybin, LSD, and N,N-DMT)—substances that have notably produced ‘profound levels of identification or merging with the natural world’.[ii] I posit that new sacred sites should also be created to support the exponentially increasing sections of society who wish to commune at places aligned with celestial procession.
