The Forgotten LSD Trip that Divided the Huxley Family

11-7-56 was not a famous LSD trip; in fact, it was unknown for several decades.
11-7-56 involved four people: Dr Humphry Osmond, the physician and researcher who coined the phrase ‘psychedelic’; Matthew Huxley, the only son of Aldous Huxley; Ellen Huxley, the wife of Matthew; and Francis Huxley, the son of famous biologist, Julian Huxley and Matthew’s first cousin. Although Aldous Huxley was not a direct participant—he was in California—he was on everyone’s mind during the trip as it unfolded.
The 11-7-56 trip might have been completely forgotten if a cache of letters had not been found in Humphry Osmond’s papers. These letters contain detailed accounts of the trip from Ellen, Francis, and Humphry—all in all a total of eleven trip reports.
